Armor 11x14

This artwork was inspired by an Inktober word prompt. Inktober is a drawing challenge in the month of October in which word prompts are offered for 31 days to encourage keeping up your drawing skills. In 2009, Jake Parker created Inktober to challenge and improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. I usually try and create art that does not depict the actual use of the prompt word, but with this artwork I felt it was necessary. African American women must wear armor. They are not allowed to be soft and vulnerable. Despite how open and supportive we are, people treat us as if we are a threat. So, although we are open, we are ready to shield and protect ourselves whenever necessary.
